Issue 3. JUNE 2007

It seems inevitable that with the drop in temperature, our immune system also seems to take a plunge. I have my own theory which I’m happy to be challenged on, it goes like this. In summer, we’re active, eat better, drink more fluids (of the non alcoholic kind), spend more time outside, sweat more thus eliminating toxins. I believe to keep healthy in winter you need to continue being active especially taking in fresh air, try to keep your diet healthy and resist temptation to reach for the fatty comfort foods and, keep up your fluid intake which can be done by having thins soups like consommé. A healthy body rarely gets sick as its immune system is boosted and fed.

I take a zinc tablet and a couple of fish oil capsules too just to be sure. I don’t know if it’s a placebo, but I have noticed I’m more vulnerable to catching something if I neglect to take these.
Offices are also a great source for catching colds and it’s hard to avoid the spread of germs in such enclosed spaces but some measures can still be taken. It may sound a bit obsessive, but keeping anti-bacterial wipes on you is a good idea especially if you share a telephone or computer with people. Interestingly the computer keyboard is as contaminated as the toilet door! So washing handsIs important to minimize  cross contamination. Use your own mug and crockery and don’t leave it around for other people to use. Try to enjoy fresh air whenever possible. I try to avoid artificial heat and put on an extra jumper instead. That way, I can go from room to room and won’t be subjecting my body to frequent temperature changes. Of course this causes some conflict between my husband and I, who is a hot house flower and thinks I have Eskimo blood flowing through my veins! Include plenty of garlic and onions in your meals. This won’t only help boost your immune system it will ensure people keep sufficient distance away from you that you won’t catch anything from them!
These are only preventive measures of course and in the event you still get sick – stay home until you get over it so you don’t infect others.

This month’s recipe is an adaptation of an old favourite. Trust me – it will clear all blocked pipes and get those internal winter fires burning!!!
Thai –style pumpkin soup
1 butternut pumpkin peeled,          3 tblsp ginger finely grated
seeded and roughly chopped          2 litres chicken stock
1 small sweet potato                      400ml coconut milk or cream
1 ordinary potato                          2 cups of fresh salad greens
2 large brown onions                     eg coriander, chives,
2 tblsp brown sugar                       Juice of 2 limes
4 tblsp peanut oil                           Salt to taste
2-3 tblsp red curry paste

Method

Put oil, brown sugar, curry paste and ginger into a large pot and stir for approx 3 minutes. Add all the vegetables including onions and stir through until well-covered by the spices. Put the lid on and allow to ‘sweat’ for approx 3 mins. Add chicken stock and simmer until all veggies are tender. Use a stab beater or masher to blend the mixture until smooth. Some chunks can be left if desired. Add coconut milk and simmer for 3-4 mins to reduce the fluid. Add the fresh lime juice, salt and greens according to taste

KITCHEN TIP. Tired of constantly losing the vegetable peeler because you’ve unwittingly thrown it out with the veggie scraps? Buy bright blue ones, they’re easy to see and won’t blend in with the peelings. For the same reason the hospitality industry only have blue Band Aids in their first aid kit.

FROM THE ‘DOH’ FILE! Every year my son asks me to make him an ice-cream cake which of course I do. As I was basking in the Mmmm’s, while at the same time feeling guilty because it’s so easy to make, one of the guests mumbled between mouthfuls of ice-cream “It must be really hard making this without it melting’ to which I replied “Yes it’s important to put it in a very, very cool oven and cook slowly for a few hours, then it’s usually ok”  She was really impressed until I couldn’t keep a straight face any longer and burst out laughing – a poker face I aint!

Can you believe it’s “hump” month already? First month of the winter season and we’re half way through the year??!!!!!  Ok, how many of you have already experienced the cold, flu or some other nasty infection as a result of the change in weather conditions?
